The 7 places to visit in Carrara in one day

Carrara, one of the most famous Italian towns in Tuscany, is mainly known for the processing of "Carrara Marble", extracted from the nearby Apulane Alps. The white and bright color of the marble surrounds the town, which is completely surrounded by the protective shadow of the Alps. Inside, although not everyone is aware of it, it is possible to visit very special places. Those who decide to dedicate a day to discovering Carrara will find inspiration in this small itinerary, an indicative list of the monuments and squares that must be seen when entering the city of marble.

1 The Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara

The Academy of Fine Arts, also known as the Palazzo Ducale, was once the residence of the Malaspina dynasty. Its construction dates back to the sixteenth century, at the behest of the Malaspina family. Today the academy preserves its appearance thanks to the restoration works that were carried out at the beginning of the 19th century. Inside it is possible to admire the beautiful sculptures of Antonio Canova, preserved by the University.

2 The Carrara marble quarries

As you might expect, Carrara is famous for its marble. Most of the quarries are open to the public so that you can discover the various extraction and processing techniques and watch the workers at work. In Colonnata, Rovaccione, and Fantiscritti it is possible to visit the white marble quarries where the famous Murales of the Cobra, representing Michelangelo's David, is hidden.

3 The Cathedral of Sant'Andrea

The Cathedral, better known by the name of "Duomo di Carrara", is located in the historic center. The Cathedral is made entirely of marble, with both Romanesque and Gothic influences. The lower part, marked by the alternation of white and black lines, belongs to the Romanesque, while the upper rose window is clearly Gothic.

4 Marina di Carrara

The port area of Carrara, characterized by the beautiful Gulf of Poets, is often the scene of romantic evening walks. A quiet place where you can enjoy the light breeze coming directly from the sea.

5 Piazza Alberica

A few steps from the Duomo, illuminated by a long line of colorful buildings, is Piazza Alberica. It is immediately recognizable thanks to the statue dedicated to Maria Beatrice D'Este, the beloved princess of Carrara.

6 Civic Museum of Marble

In 1982, the Municipality of Carrara wanted to build a place where the history of the city could be welcomed. All the most important memories and recognitions of Carrara are contained in the museum, which is considered by the inhabitants as a symbol of strength and belonging.

7 Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie

The Sanctuary is not far from the Cathedral and can be reached on foot. The church is small and very simple from the outside, but the inside is really capable of astonishing. A triumph of colors and light fills the entire central nave, immersing the church in an atmosphere of peace and serenity.
