The Buca delle Fate Archaeological Park, located in Piano di Mommio in the province of Lucca, is considered one of the most interesting examples of natural history. A path made of caves and paths, completely immersed in nature and in the memory of the inhabitants who lived there in the past.
The visit is possible only through a walking path, following the indications of the signs positioned throughout the Park. A walk of almost two hours, where you can test yourself and visit the individual caves hidden in the rock.
The current path was created and uncovered by the University of Pisa and by the Group of Prehistoric and Archaeological Research "Carlo Alberto Blanc" of Viareggio.
The collaboration of the two associations led to the discovery of six excavated caves, which show signs from the Middle Palaeolithic and the Copper Age.
Before the 1960s this incredible memory of the past had not yet been discovered, and we have to thank the research if we can enjoy the beauty of the mosaics of the past.
For those arriving from Viareggio , the route to get to the Buca delle Fate Park is very well signposted.
In fact, there are many indications of the position of the park already from the highway, so that visitors can reach it easily.
Before entering you will find the parking lot to be able to continue towards the beginning of the route, so that you can enjoy an adventure completely immersed in nature. The path is quite easy to walk, and is therefore also suitable for the less experienced and for families.
Those who love nature and trekking in general will find the Park an excellent attraction, especially for the beauty of the individual caves.
In particular, the six caves that have been discovered date back to the Paleolithic period.
In the Buca di Fondineto - the first in order of sequence - the ancient burial of a prehistoric family was found, together with their funerary equipment.
Instead, in the Buca della Iena and in the Grotta del Capriolo, animal remains and ancient artifacts have been identified that date back to the period of Neanderthal man .
Most of the artifacts have been transported to the nearby Viareggio Museum , while it is still possible to observe the beauty of the drawings brought to light by archaeologists. Their presence is the testimony that someone lived in those places millions and millions of years ago.
Seeing them is a unique experience, which makes us re-evaluate the way of living and perceiving time. Nature transforms itself to welcome the new generations and human beings are born and grow together with it. The legend of the Fairies, which according to the ancients lived in the Caves, can be breathed throughout the itinerary and covers the adventure that is experienced at the Buca delle Fate Archaeological Park with a veil of magic.
