A fantastic natural lake located in South Tyrol, located 97 kilometers from Bolzano, Lake Braies is a real jewel of the Dolomites. His is a show not to be missed in all seasons: in autumn it reflects the warm colors of the trees and in winter it offers a suggestive spectacle. It gathers around Nordic walking enthusiasts and thousands of tourists in spring and summer due to its emerald color.
Lake Braies is also the largest in the Dolomites and originated following the fall of gigantic rock towers in the valley. The waters that accumulated here gave life to the natural lake of Braies, the so-called barrage lake.
Legend has it that the savages once came here to mine for gold, but when the envious shepherds of the area tried to steal the gold, the savages opened underground springs, causing all the wealth of the lake to sink. Today this lake is known for the Italian TV series "Un passo dal cielo", starring Terence Hill.
Here at Lake Braies, an area of 31 hectares at 1496 meters above sea level, you can walk along the surrounding paths. This trail was created in 1910 for the guests and owners of the Hotel "Pragser Wildsee".
In summer many tourists choose the colorful Braies Lake as a starting point for walks, while in winter it is filled with snow and ice and is the ideal place for Nordic walking with snowshoes. Nature is the absolute protagonist of this area and it is possible to make very nostalgic and suggestive boat trips, which remind us of the time when the boat was the only way to reach the opposite shore.
The walking route is truly a unique experience to admire the surrounding landscape, but also stopping by the lake and having a picnic is one of the most popular activities, so it is easy to find tables and benches suitable for the occasion.
Nearby there is also the Fanes-Senes-Braies nature park whose protected area extends in part to the municipalities of Badia, Braies, Dobbiaco, La Valle, Marebbe, and Valdaora. Here the most popular activity is hiking which allows you to admire the fantastic Dolomite landscapes along the way.
