As a port city in Puglia, Brindisi is a mixture of different realities and cultures. Many people visit Brindisi precisely for its hub to other cities, for the nearby Ostuni and Alberobello, and the main hub from Greece to Albania. In practice, Brindisi looks like a modern city, rich in cultural life, with fantastic medieval views and a truly suggestive port. Brindisi is therefore not just a place of passage, but a real tourist and holiday destination, where you can spend a vacation and immerse yourself in a particular, authentic, and unforgettable atmosphere.
A modern city with a medieval flavor: Brindisi is a succession of narrow streets and ancient buildings. Among the most important monuments of the historic center of Brindisi stands the Swabian Castle, also called the Great Castle, this trapezoid-shaped fortress is one of the fortifications commissioned by Frederick II in Puglia to protect the city.
Among the most beautiful churches is without a doubt the Church of San Sepolcro, which has a circular nave and was built on the remains of a Roman domus with walls still visible. In fact, it is a copy of the rotunda of the Anastasis in Jerusalem. The Cathedral of Brindisi is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and is located in Piazza Duomo, next to Palazzo Balsamo and its famous loggia, Palazzo del Seminario, and the Provincial Archaeological Museum Francesco Ribezzo.
The museum is accessed through the portico of the Knights of Jerusalem and allows you to have an overview of the populations of the Brindisi area, from the lower Palaeolithic to the Roman era with some sections dedicated to underwater archeology. The most interesting part is the one dedicated to the Messapians, the ancient population that inhabited Salento in the seventh century BC.
Finally, there is a monument that cannot be missed: the Alfonsino or Aragonese Castle, also built as a fortress to defend against the Islamic powers, was built with vermilion-colored stone, so much so that some call it the Red Castle. The castle is located on an island in front of Brindisi, known as the island of Sant'Andrea, and is a real feast for the eyes because at sunset it takes on an even more red hue.
The most evocative and particular area of Brindisi is undoubtedly the port. The port of Brindisi is built in a natural inlet and is the place where ships bound for Greece, Turkey and the islands stop. In practice, the modern and industrial port blends perfectly with the fishing port and the old port. In this area, one of the most lively and interesting, you can find several places where you can taste sensational aperitifs.
