Verona is much more than a setting for a tragic love story. It is a city that offers a unique combination of art, history, romance, culinary culture and discovery. It is a dream destination known throughout the world and one that should not be missed.
Verona attracts a significant number of tourists on an annual basis, largely due to its rich cultural heritage and the aesthetic appeal of its architectural landmarks. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising bridges over the Adige River and an exceptional urban structure.
The Arena di Verona hosts renowned events nationwide and internationally, attracting top artists due to its unique ambience under the stars. Verona is a city that is worthy of a visit at any time of year. Its beautiful sights and proximity to other cities such as Padua, Venice and Vicenza make it an attractive destination for tourists and business travellers alike.
The following is a list of the most important sights in Verona.
A tour of Verona cannot begin without visiting the main and most beautiful square, Piazza Bra: located in the historic centre, it is dominated by the most important buildings, such as the Arena of Verona, the Palazzo della Gran Guardia and Palazzo Barbieri, the Town Hall.
The famous Roman amphitheatre, which dates back to the 1st century A.D. and has a capacity of 12,500 seats, can therefore be admired in a single square. Piazza Bra, the nightlife hotspot of the city, a destination for both young people who meet and for people who like to take an evening walk under the lights of the Palazzo della Gran Guardia, a venue for exhibitions and congresses.
Palazzo Barbieri, on the other hand, houses the Verona Town Hall with its majestic façade and an interior rich in frescoes and famous paintings.
Also not to be missed is a tour of Piazza dei Signori, known as Piazza Dante because of a statue of Dante in the centre of the square surrounded by buildings connected by splendid arcades. From Piazza dei Signori you can go to the chapel of Santa Maria Antica to admire the Arche Scaligere, splendid monumental Gothic tombs.
A visit to the house of Romeo and Juliet is an essential part of any tour of Verona. Verona is the setting for the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, immortalised by William Shakespeare. The palace, which dates back to the 13th century, is now considered as the home of the Capulets. It features a splendid red-brick façade, a Gothic-style portal and a bronze statue of Juliet just outside in the court yard, which is overlooked by the famous balcony of the young girl in love's room.
And last but not least, a walk through Via Mazzini, a popular destination for tourists and shoppers, is highly recommended.
