A visit to Verona would be incomplete without a stop at Villa Mosconi Bertani, a significant complex situated in the heart of Valpolicella. The villa is situated in a picturesque location, surrounded by lush green foliage and a renowned vineyard.
The villa is conveniently located in between Verona and Lake Garda, making it an ideal destination for those who appreciate nature and greenspace. It is a must-see for anyone seeking to experience an evocative place.
The Villa Mosconi Bertani cellar dates back to 1500 and was constructed on the remains of a pre-existing settlement dating back to the time of the Arusnati, an ancient Italic people who lived in Valpolicella.
The interior of the villa is tastefully decorated with romantic frescoes and stuccoes, while the wooded garden, with its ancient statues, has long been a source of inspiration for artists of the 18th century. The park was also a popular destination for the local literary community, thanks to the redevelopment work carried out by the Mosconi family.
We invite you to explore the splendour of Villa Mosconi Bertani, where you will uncover the secrets of a refined and evocative environment, the beating heart of 18th-century Veneto culture.
The Villa Mosconi Bertani complex was commissioned by the Fattori family in approximately 1735. In 1969, the property was sold unfinished to the Mosconi family, who completed the construction by adding an eight-hectare English-style romantic park. The Mosconi family assumed control of the vineyard and the villa soon became one of the largest wineries in northern Italy.
Villa Mosconi Bertani also served as a vibrant cultural hub and literary salon, drawing inspiration from the English garden, the exceptional wine, and the villa's remarkable interior, which showcased a unique blend of classical and romantic art. In 1957, the Bertani family acquired the property and invested in renovating the ancient and historically significant wine cellar.
The main building's façade is distinguished by a raised section supported by Tuscan and Ionic columns, culminating in a striking tympanum featuring nine statues of mythological gods. The exterior of the building is entirely white and imposing, while maintaining a classical and refined appearance.
The Hall of the Muses is the primary feature of the villa, spanning all three floors and divided by wooden balustrades. It culminates in a vault frescoed in perspective, featuring an oval design that creates a fantastical trompe l'oeil effect. Flora, representing spring and summer, and the seasons of autumn and winter, represented by Flora under storm clouds, are depicted in the centre of the fresco.
In the 18th century, nature parks began to emerge in Verona, reflecting the prevailing trends of the era. The land behind Villa Mosconi Bertani was considered ideal by the Mosconi brothers for this type of project.
A small lake with a central islet, accessible via a wooden bridge, was constructed.
The romantic park is a significant attraction of the Villa Mosconi Bertani, which exemplifies a profound appreciation for nature and the land. It serves as a source of great inspiration in these exceptional settings.
Vineyards have been a feature of the property since at least 1028, with oral testimony confirming their existence at that time. The first significant planting was carried out by the Fattori family around 1600, who were responsible for the cultural transformation. Over time, experts followed, perfecting the cultivation process.
These cellars still house significant quantities of vintage wine, and it was in this cellar that the classic Amarone della Valpolicella was originally created as a result of an innovative approach.
