The 10 things to see in Pescara

One of the most famous cities of Abruzzo is undoubtedly the coastal city of Pescara, not only for its nautical tourism activities but also for its cultural importance and beauty. In fact, Pescara hides several monuments and museums not to be missed and a unique cultural wealth: the writer Gabriele D'Annunzio was born here and drew a lot of inspiration from this culturally lively place, surrounded by the sea and the beautiful mountains of the central Apennines. Pescara is a city worth visiting and exploring, starting with these 10 must-sees.

Square of the Rebirth

A suggestive name for the main square of the city, also known as Piazza Salotto, where people usually meet to chat or to stop for a drink and a meal in the characteristic restaurants. In Piazza della Rinascita you can walk around and visit the shops, the arcades, and the sculpture of the elephant by Vicentino Michetti. This part of Pescara must be seen on foot, in the spring you can reach the wonderful wisteria via Milano, planted in 1930 and survived the bombardments of the Second World War.

The Cathedral of San Cetteo

The Cathedral of Pescara is an Abruzzo Romanesque-style building whose construction was financed by Gabriele D'Annunzio himself.

Gabriele D'Annunzio's house

The decadent Italian writer was certainly the city's most famous resident. He was born and spent his childhood here in 1863. The University of Chieti-Pescara bears his name as a sign of respect and gratitude to a great writer who has written the history of Italian literature and beyond. His house is now a museum that can be visited, where the furniture and relics that belonged to the writer are still present, as well as the seat of numerous exhibitions or cultural events.

Old Pescara

Like any city worthy of its name, the oldest part of Pescara has its own peculiarities and is well worth a visit, starting with Piazza Unione, a colorful and lively square during the day, and the center of Pescara's nightlife in the evening. Pescara is a city by the sea and in this old part, towards Via Puccini, you can still see the typical fishermen's houses of the old fishing village, many of which were destroyed by the bombing during the war.

The overflows

These are ancient stilts on the sea made of wood to which fishing nets are attached. This place is very characteristic because at night it lights up with the colors of the sunset and many of these stilt houses are now restaurants where you can dine or have suggestive aperitifs.

The seaside

The coast of Pescara is very popular in the summer and you can find numerous equipped facilities ideal for families. In addition, the Lungomare offers the possibility of bicycle rides for those who love sports and who, if they wish, can reach Francavilla al Mare in the south or Montesilvano in the north.

The Bridge of the Sea

Opened in 2009, the Ponte del Mare is the true symbol of Pescara. 466 meters long, all passable, it unites two shores of Pescara offering a beautiful view of the Gran Sasso and an evocative evening scenery when it is colored with different strategically positioned LED lights.

Pineta d'Avalos or Dannunziana pine forest

In the southern part of Pescara, 53 hectares of ancient forest belonged to the Avalos family, who held the title of Marquis at the time of the Bourbons. In this pine forest, there are the Aleppo pine, the maritime pine, and the domestic pine.

Quills

This village is located not far from Pescara and is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, also known as the brick village, given the presence of brick in all the houses. Also, there are many churches here. This village lends itself very well to a weekend trip together with a visit to Lake Penne, which is located in the center between the Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso.

The Majella National Park

After seeing the sea, you cannot miss a trip to the mountains, and those of the Majella National Park are among the most beautiful in Italy. Located between Chieti, L'Aquila and Pescara, La Majella is the perfect place for those who love nature.
