Gallipoli is a picturesque place where there is no lack of natural and artistic beauties that together create an elegant and vital mix. The city of Gallipoli is also known as the "Pearl of the Ionian Sea" and attracts an increasing number of tourists who choose to spend their vacations here.

Precisely because of the many tourists who flock to the beaches and streets of Gallipoli, the city has equipped itself with everything necessary to make the stay comfortable and repeatable. For the rest, nature takes care of it: here there are never short of suggestive sunsets with a thousand colors and the historic buildings are perfect for filling up on art and culture even on vacation. The historic center of Gallipoli and the village are completely surrounded by the sea, and have an inestimable cultural value walking through the center is like taking a dip in the past, surrounded by the Baroque style and many other beauties to be experienced.

The Angevin Aragonese Castle

The focal point of the whole city of Gallipoli undoubtedly remains the grandiose Aragonese Castle. The Castle is surrounded by the sea and is located at the mouth of the seventeenth-century bridge that connects the village of Gallipoli to the mainland. The bridge, in practice, connects the old city to the new city creating a truly particular whole. The Castle has a square base with a tower in each corner, while the Ravellino, a fifth tower, is located in an advanced position compared to the others to act as a defense and vanguard. The large rooms inside the castle and the walkways are absolutely not to be missed.

The Cathedral of Sant'Agata

This Basilica is the largest temple of Christian worship in the whole city. The façade is full of niches containing various saints that flank the pediment and a large honeycomb window. The architect of this impressive work of art is the great Giuseppe Zimbalo, whose style has inspired many other local artists. The treasures kept inside the Cathedral of Sant’Agata are fascinating: the room is large and the three naves are divided into two rows of twelve columns. The ceiling is finely decorated, while in the aisles you can find several truly wonderful paintings. The high altar, created by the German artist Giorgio Aver, is made up of polychrome marbles that enhance the sumptuousness of the forms.

The Ionian coast of Salento

The beaches of Gallipoli are very popular and always active, full of comfort for the day and entertainment for the evening. Among the most beautiful are:

  • La Purità Beach, close to the island of the village of Gallipoli, is the closest and most used beach by the inhabitants who also call it La Puritate.
  • The Baia Verde beach is located about a kilometer and a half from Gallipoli and has a crystalline sea, fine sand, and lots of vegetation, a riot of colors.
  • Punta della Suina, on the other hand, is atypical but beautiful because it alternates sandy stretches with rocky stretches, a true natural masterpiece.
  • Punta Pizzo, within the Sant’Andrea Nature Reserve, is another place of extraordinary beauty.
