The medieval village of Montepulciano is located in the province of Siena, surrounded by the vegetation of Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana. A unique historical town of its kind, known throughout the world for the production of the famous "Nobile" wine.
Montepulciano was built with a difference in height of more than 60 meters, which allowed it to obtain one of the most particular territories in all of Tuscany. Only in this town can you find the characteristic underground cellars.
The cellars, most of which can be visited in their entirety, are responsible for the production and conservation of the Nobile wine. Being underground, they are the best place to store the barrels containing the first production wine, so much so that they have made the Nobile a DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) product.
A visit to Borgo di Montepulciano can be extremely interesting, both to discover the local vineyards and cellars and to observe the monuments and buildings of the historic center.
Together we will discover some of the main attractions of the village so that you can dedicate yourself to discovering one of the most interesting places in Tuscany.
A visit to the famous historical center of Montepulciano cannot begin without entering Piazza Grande, the true heart of the town.
Here, every year in August, the "Bravio delle Botti" takes place, an amusing competition in which two "pushers" from each of the eight districts of Montepulciano are the protagonists. The challengers have to carry a heavy barrel uphill for about a kilometer, trying to outrun their opponents and arrive first at Piazza Grande, right in front of the Duomo.
This event has made the medieval village of Montepulciano famous, and every year it attracts new spectators who come to see the competition.
If you can't visit the city for the Bravio, you can always stop and admire the beauty of the medieval streets and the Duomo itself. The two main gates, Porta al Prato and Porta delle Farine have remained intact since the construction period and represent an important example of medieval architecture.
The Colonna del Marzocco, a marble column surmounted by the famous heraldic lion of Florence, is located a short distance from Porta al Prato. The same lion decorates some of the noble palaces of the town, including Palazzo Avignonesi, built in honor of the family that governed Montepulciano in the Middle Ages.
The village of Montepulciano is surrounded by vineyards that produce different types of wine.
The owners of the vineyards have created special "common paths" where visitors can admire the different qualities of the grapes and the production methods. It is advisable to plan an itinerary before departure, starting from the historic center of Montepulciano and then heading north along the Tuscan countryside.
There is no shortage of scenic and panoramic points along the way, all strategic places to stop and admire the beauty of the vineyards and the surrounding nature.
The underground cellars, on the other hand, are directly accessible from the historical center. Visiting them can be a fun and new way to discover how Montepulciano wine is made, as well as a unique way to get in direct contact with producers and locals.
