Sometimes, to get to know a place, it is necessary to go to unusual places, places that are not visited by too many tourists, places that are the most genuine, the most authentic. Manduria is one of those places. Manduria is truly a jewel of the Salento: in this area, the archaic Messapian civilization developed, and today the history and charm of this city have been preserved.
The Archaeological Park of Manduria houses a unique heritage that extends over more than 16 hectares. The park can be visited in less than an hour and a half and you can go back in time and see the ancient unfolding of life in the city. Visiting the Archaeological Park of Manduria at sunset allows you to enjoy the extraordinary play of light on the walls and ancient ruins. Touching the Messapian walls is a truly unique experience, you can also visit the Fonte Pliniano, a natural cave from which flows a source of sacred water.
Not only archaeology and history but also a lot of fun and beauty, Manduria is a city full of attractions to be discovered.
Manduria is also known as the city of primitive wine: the Museum of the Primitivo Wine Civilization is located in the Consortium of Wine Producers of Manduria. Here you can visit the cellars and old cisterns that have been turned into a museum, where you can see everyday objects related to winemaking, such as wine presses, must tanks, and many other machines. At the end of the visit, there is a wine tasting accompanied by typical local products.
The area of San Pietro in Bevagna is famous for the Sanctuary that is located here because, according to legend, St. Peter was shipwrecked on this coast in 45 AD. Here, in addition to visiting the sanctuary, it is possible to see the watchtower, also dedicated to St. Peter, and enjoy a very beautiful salty beach, perfect for those who love fine sand and practice snorkeling.
Not to be missed in the coastal area is the Torre Colimena, a Saracen watchtower that can be climbed to enjoy a fantastic and unrepeatable seascape.
A few steps from the Mother Church, recognizable by the stone lions that guard it and the Gothic elements of the façade, is the entrance to the Jewish Ghetto. Here, a visit to the magnificent synagogue is a must. The Ghetto is also a place rich in history and traditions.
