The Marmore waterfall

The Marmore waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Italy which is naturally rich in streams and surrounded by lush vegetation. It is located in Valnerina, a short distance from the city of Terni, inserted within the Marmore Falls National Park and the Nera River Regional Park. A place to visit is almost a must if you are near the city of Terni, extremely fascinating and has fascinated poets and writers thanks to its beauty.

The history of the Marmore waterfall

The construction of the Marmore Waterfall dates back to the Roman period, in 271 B.C., when they wanted to reclaim the marshy area near the Nera River. The Marmore Waterfall is formed by the Velino River, which flows for 165 meters into the Nera River and then into the Piediluco Lake. Its name, Marmore, comes from the calcium carbonate salts that are deposited on the mountain rocks and that, when reflected in the sunlight, make these rocks appear as white as marble. Marmore is also the name of a nearby medieval village, a particularly charming village that, together with Piediluco and Arrone, is one of the most beautiful in the Valnerina. This area deserves a thorough visit and is ideal for the whole family and for those who like to be in direct contact with nature along the many paths. The cliff, with its beautiful waterfall, has inspired artists such as Virgil, Cicero, and Lord Byron.

What to do at the Marmore Waterfall

The waterfall can be accessed from two different points, the lower and the upper belvedere. From the upper belvedere, you can enjoy the jump of the waterfall from an elevated point and admire its power. From the lower belvedere, on the other hand, it is possible to access the lower part of the park and enjoy the majesty of the waterfall. Between the two points, it is possible to walk along the Panoramic Path, which has been specially designed to visit the most evocative places, such as the Balcony of the Lovers and the Specola, a loggia built by Pope Pius VI.

There are 6 paths in the Parco Della Cascata, which are well-marked and signposted. You will enjoy not only nature but also art because near the waterfall you will find the remains of industrial archaeology and particular hydraulic works of the Industrial Archaeological Park of Campacci di Marmore. Night visits with suggestive and strategic LED lighting are offered, always by reservation, but also other activities such as rafting and soft rafting, canyoning, kayaking, and much more. The visit to the caves of the Marmore Falls is very special and you will find several: Grotta Della Morta, Grotta delle Diaclasi, Grotta Delle Colonne, and Grotta della Condotta.
