Narni, its historic center and the Museum of Palazzo Eroli

Narni, a mysterious Italian village in the Umbrian countryside in the province of Terni, is an authentic medieval village full of mysteries and secret stories that are waiting to be revealed. Walking through the alleys and suggestive streets of Narni will take you to a place suspended in time, more like a scenography than a real village. Let's see what you can find in Narni and its historical center and what is the ideal place to learn more about this mysterious city: the Museum of Palazzo Eroli.

Discovering Narni

Piazza Garibaldi, the main square of the city, is the beating heart of the city, under which there is an ancient Roman cistern, today the site of adventurous climbing routes. Here is the fountain of the same name, rebuilt after the sacking of 1527, with a fourteenth-century bronze basin. Going up the characteristic streets of the city, you will discover the oldest part of the city, the seat of the Cathedral of San Giovenale, dating back to 1100, where you will find Piazza del Priori with the historic building. The origins of Narni date back to 300 B.C., when the Romans settled in the Umbrian town and made it an important fortress on the Via Flaminia. At that time it was known as Narnia. The historical center is full of shops and squares where you can eat and meet as in the medieval era that particularly marked the city. Interesting is the Rocca Albornoz, located south of the city. It is an imposing and robust fortress that was the home of popes and leaders and was built in the sixteenth century.

The Museum of the Eroli Palace

In the center of the ancient city of Narni stands Palazzo Eroli, which houses the Museum of the City and Territory. A visit to this museum is the best way to learn about the history of Narni. Inside there are pictorial, sculptural, and archaeological works of great importance, and the museum itinerary is divided into two sections: the first houses fossil finds from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Here there are numerous references to the life of the famous Gattamelata, that is Erasmo da Narni. In the second section, you can admire the art gallery with works by Domenico Ghirlandaio. The museum is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history not only of Narni, but also of the entire Terni area; moreover, the building often hosts meetings, conferences, conventions, and presentations, but also exhibitions and activities that involve both tourists and citizens in the life of the city and its enhancement.
