What to see in Fermo

Fermo is a town located on the summit and along the slopes of Colle Sàbulo, 319 meters above sea level. It is an ancient city of Roman origin, with a surprising medieval village and a breathtaking panoramic view that overlooks the mountains and reaches the sea.

The city of Fermo is now divided into two distinct parts: the historical part which is located on Mount Sabulo, and the modern part which unfolds all around. Furthermore, Fermo offers the possibility of taking a holiday along the coast, camping, or resting in fully equipped tourist villages.

Piazza del Popolo and Palazzo dei Priori

The heart of the historical center of Fermo is undoubtedly Piazza del Popolo, which extends longitudinally and is lined with arcades on both sides. The most important buildings of the city dominate the square, such as the inevitable Town Hall, the Civic Library, and the seat of the Pinacoteca, the Palazzo dei Priori. The latter deserves to be photographed: built-in 1300 and renovated in 1400, it has a double staircase leading to the bronze statue of Sixtus V, seated on a throne, who was Bishop of Fermo before being elected Pope. Inside the building, you can admire an excellent art collection, including the work of Pieter Paul Rubens "Adoration of the Shepherds". The treasures of Palazzo dei Priori do not end there: inside there is the magnificent Sala del Mappamondo, which houses ancient and precious books, including 300 manuscripts, 127 codices, 300,000 volumes of drawings, engravings, and other relics. The peculiarity of this room is the globe in the center, which dates back to 1700. This room is not to be missed.

The Roman cisterns

Among the main attractions of Fermo, we find the Roman cisterns. The cisterns are accessed through a guided tour starting from the Tourist Information Office which you can always find in Piazza del Popolo. The cisterns extend for 2200 square meters, with a total of 30 rooms divided into three rows. Their construction dates back to the 1st century AD. and had the function of distributing drinking water to the city of Fermo in recent times they have been used as a refuge for the Second World War. An engineering work unique in the world and very well maintained, the Roman cisterns of Fermo are a must on the tour.
