The city of Chieti is one of the most important art cities of Abruzzo and has unique beauties enclosed in a place that is not strictly touristy. There are not many who choose to take a trip to Chieti and therefore the itinerary around the city is quiet and particular. There are many treasures and areas of interest that this city holds, from the temples and the Roman Amphitheater to the Cathedral, Chieti is a jumble of architectural beauties nestled between the mountains and the nature of the wildest, most authentic, and natural Italian region.
The historic center of Chieti is a lively succession of ancient monuments, churches, noble palaces, squares, fountains, and alleys. But above all in Chieti, you will have the opportunity to come across many viewpoints that make this city the terrace of Abruzzo since the city enjoys magnificent views of the mountains and the sea.
In the historic center, you will come across the Cathedral of San Giustino, the patron saint of the city, a neo-Gothic building complete with a bell tower whose medieval appearance has been remodeled several times over the years. Inside, it looks like a Baroque building with white and golden stuccoes, and it is still possible to visit the medieval crypt containing the relics of San Giustino.
A characteristic place in the historic center of Chieti is certainly the ancient fish and meat market, called Esedra Della Pescheria and built in the nineteenth century near Porta Pescara. While the main artery of the historic center is Corso Marrucino, which overlooks the most important buildings of the city, including that of the Prefecture, Palazzo de Mayo, and the Palace of the Chamber of Commerce.
For history lovers, in Chieti, it is possible to visit the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo, set up inside the palace of the splendid Villa Frigerj. The Museum contains the famous Warrior of Capestrano, a life-size statue that portrays the king of the Vestini, the ancient Abruzzese population. In addition, it is possible to see the resting Hercules, a very refined bronze statue. Finally, again for those who are passionate about architecture and archeology, a visit to the Roman amphitheater dating back to the first century and which still hosts theatrical reviews thanks to its excellent acoustics is not to be missed. The Roman remains found during excavations at the Amphitheater are contained within the "La Civitella" National Archaeological Museum.
Walking through the streets of the city of Chieti is truly an excellent activity that allows you to fully get to know the lively and culturally alive atmosphere. The main square is Piazza Gian Battista Vico and offers passers-by the chance to see the city and its inhabitants in their daily or festive activities. The surroundings of Chieti are very fascinating: Ortona, for example, has a castle overlooking the sea, on the Trabocchi coast. Or you can visit the suggestive Underground Chieti and see some of the passable tunnels dating back to Roman times.
