The Costa dei Trabocchi

Perhaps not everyone knows that the sea in Abruzzo is a splendid destination for summer holidays and walks outside the city. The Costa del Trabocchi, in the province of Chieti, is the most interesting and beautiful coastal stretch of the Abruzzo coast and is worth a visit. This long stretch of the Abruzzo coast, between Ortona and Vasto, has as its protagonist the famous Trabocchi, stilts built on the sea, which have a very suggestive appearance, and which are separated from the beach by wooden bridges and today host several restaurants and characteristic places. Once these Trabocchi represented a means of fishing and still today, in the 40 kilometers of the beach of the Costa del Trabocchi there are as many as 23.

What to do on the Costa dei Trabocchi

The Costa del Trabocchi of the Adriatic coast is located in the province of Chieti where there is the Trabucco, which is a fishing machine on stilts. The coast stretches along State Road 16 from Francavilla al Mare to Vasto, passing through Ortona and San Vito Chietino. Villages such as Ortona or San Vito Chietino rise on rocky hills that reach the sea and can be visited to enjoy fantastic views of the coast. Rocca San Giovanni, for example, is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

In addition to visiting the many villages, the itinerary along the Costa del Trabocchi has the Trabocchi as its protagonist. The Trabocco di Valle Grotte, in San Vito, is certainly one of the most evocative, but there are many others worth seeing.

The spectacular beaches that can be found along this stretch of coast are surrounded by greenery and many of them are protected by nature reserves. Among the most beautiful is certainly the beach of Punta dell'Acquabella in Ortona, made up of pebbles and surrounded by rocks and cliffs, where you can find a really clean sea. Also along the coast of Ortona is the beach of Ripari di Giobbe, where the rocks also create fantastic scenarios.

On the coast overlooking San Vito is the beach of Calata Turchino, which evokes a turquoise sea and from which it is also possible to reach the beaches of Rocco Mancini and Valle Grotte. Inside the natural reserve of Punta Aderci, the beach of Mottagrossa is famous as a natural beach, while in Vasto, inside the reserve of Punta Aderci, there is the beach of Punta Penna, the most beautiful of all.
