The very special Borgo di Pitigliano is located in the province of Grosseto, on a hill surrounded by three large cliffs. The fortress of Pitigliano is located in the characteristic "tuff area", where it is possible to visit natural and artificial caves built through the tuff.
The village is famous for its historical center, which perfectly preserves some of the original buildings and streets. The small number of inhabitants - only 3700 - makes this place even more authentic; a small time machine in the heart of Tuscany.
For several years Pitigliano has been one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy", a list of unique villages created by the National Association of Italian Municipalities. Its visit allows you to immerse yourself in a landscape of other times, to lose sight of the chaos of modernity, and to get closer to the past.
The first thing you will notice when you enter the village is the so-called "Vie Cave". It is a system of streets of Etruscan origin, dug directly out of the rock. The well preserved streets from the origins of Pitigliano are still characterized by the presence of high tuff walls.
The Vie Cave surrounds the town and leads to the entrance of the famous historical center, known for its thriving Jewish community. In fact, the center is often referred to as "Little Jerusalem", with the central synagogue and the monumental Jewish cemetery of Pitigliano located in the southern part of the town.
Inside the historic center, you can visit the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. Both buildings were built between the 13th and 14th centuries, following a predominantly Baroque architectural layout. The Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Pitigliano, is characterized by a high bell tower that offers a unique view of the entire Borgo and its surroundings.
Let's move on to the beautiful museums of the Borgo, which will allow you to study the details and the historical testimonies of the place.
The first interesting museum is located in Palazzo Orsini, the former home of the Orsini family. The Civic Archaeological Museum contains a large series of tools dating back to the Etruscan period, combined with some other archaeological finds found in the Borgo.
For those who prefer to be in direct contact with nature, the open-air Archaeological Museum is the perfect option. The Vie Cave is the setting for this innovative open-air museum, which covers part of the Gradone Plateau.
During the visit, it is possible to explore the reproduction of a Bronze Age village, with characteristic elements of the period and original finds. Guides are available to explain in detail the origins of the site and to accompany the visitor in the discovery of the past and the peoples who inhabited Borgo di Pitigliano.
