Puglia is a land rich in traditions and culture where real natural, architectural, and historical beauties can be found on every corner. The Trulli of Alberobello is a typical limestone house that is at the center of the international image that Puglia itself gives. The Trulli are unique in the world and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, an artistic, cultural, and architectural heritage considered part of humanity and therefore to be protected in all respects.
Alberobello is located in the south of Puglia, in the province of Bari, an area worth visiting in the Apulian hinterland, a few kilometers from Polignano a mare. An ideal tour of Puglia includes a stop at the Trulli of Alberobello to admire these typical white buildings with pointed brick roofs. In this corner of the world, it will seem to be transported directly into another dimension, a suggestive reality that will leave you truly amazed.
This area, although it seems to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, was completely rebuilt in the fourteenth century when the land was given to the Count of Conversano by Robert of Anjou. The idea was to repopulate a completely uninhabited area. Trulli are constructions very similar to huts and the peculiarity is that they are built dry, that is without the use of glue between the bricks. This was a construction technique adapted to the constant attacks and reconstructions that took place during the year.
These white brick huts have a double skin and very small windows, but they are characterized by the decorative pinnacle on the top of the roof, which was supposed to ward off evil influences. Another element of folklore is the white inscriptions found on the trulli, magical symbols or signs of the zodiac.
The trulli to visit in Alberobello is the Sovereign Trulli, the only two-story trulli that today houses a museum; the House of Love, which is the headquarters of the Tourist Office, where you can obtain information about the areas to visit or request a guided tour.
Aja Piccola, on the other hand, is a village of trulli made up of small alleys, and Casa Pezzolla is a complex of communicating cones that houses the Museum of the Territory. Entering the individual trulli, you will learn a lot about how people lived in these small huts, where the rooms were very narrow and the windows very small, so much so that to gain even more space, many trulli have mezzanines inside.
