What to see in Macerata

Macerata is a city rich in history, culture, and magic, a beautiful town that is also alive, full of young people and interesting initiatives, attention to citizens, clubs for children, and above all exceptional restaurants. In short, Macerata, more than any other, is a city not only to see but also to live intensely.

Macerata boasts one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1290, and perhaps that is why it is an active and lively city, full of young people because it has been able to renew itself over time, always finding its way to the forefront. Walking through the streets of Macerata, you can admire spectacular buildings and magical architecture that flows from the narrow streets to the prestigious squares, towers, and museums.

Here is what you can find on a walk in the beautiful city of Macerata.

The Sferisterio

The Sferisterio Arena is one of the most famous works in Macerata and represents a very important historical building. The Macerata Opera Festival and many other interesting events take place here. The arena was designed by Ireneo Aleandri and is a splendid example of nineteenth-century neoclassical architecture, commissioned by some wealthy inhabitants who financed the construction to host the game of ball with the bracelet, a very popular game, to raise the Macerata from a dark period of crisis.

Buonaccorsi Palace

Another symbol of the city of Macerata is undoubtedly this eighteenth-century building, which houses three different exhibition areas: the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Ancient Art, and the Museum of Carriages, all in rooms richly decorated with frescoes and highly suggestive.

Ricci Palace

For those who love Italian art of the twentieth century, the ideal location is certainly Palazzo Ricci, a historic residence that houses a collection of paintings belonging to the main movements of Italian art of the twentieth century, from De Chirico to Severini passing through Boccioni.

The Civic Tower and the astronomical clock

The Civic Tower is 64 meters high and is characterized by its magnificent astronomical clock very similar to that of Venice. It is an extremely complex machine that performs various functions by adjusting the operation of the music box, the strokes that mark the hours, the bird that makes the small bell ring by hitting it with its beak, the carousel with the angel, and the Magi, the advancement of the hour dial hand, the movements of the discs of celestial bodies and of the Dragon.

The clock of the Ranieri brothers is one of the works on which it is worth dwelling because, in addition to the hours, it shows the celestial quadrants, the Sun and the Moon, as well as the circuits of the five planets that were known at the time.
