The legend of Lake Santo, the secret of the Modenese Apennines

The territory of the Modenese Apennines is known for being particularly rich in attractions. Among the beautiful lakes and the landscape marked by the colors of spring, there are many destinations suitable for nature lovers.

One of the main attractions is Lake Santo Modenese, one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole province of Modena. It is located in Frignano Park, not far from the characteristic village of Pievepelago. Lake Santo is very popular, wrapped in an aura of misery and a very romantic legend.

In summer, families and groups of friends choose it to cool down from the heat of the summer; in winter, however, it is the favorite place for lovers of walks in the snow. Let's see in detail how to reach the lake and why you should give it a chance.

How to reach the Holy Lake

We have seen that this beautiful Modenese lake is not far from the village of Pievepelago. Once you reach the village, just follow the signs and you will reach the famous Lago Santo.

The path to follow starts from the main square of the village and is so easy that even beginners can manage it. Lovers of trekking and excursions will certainly have less difficulty, but with a little effort, you will easily reach the destination.

You can stop and admire this fantastic body of water, in the reassuring shade of the surrounding mountains, or go on to discover the other lakes of the Apennines. The Sacred Lake is an excellent starting point for discovering all the other lakes in Modena. Lake Baccio, Lake Scaffaiolo, Lake Ninfa and Lake Turchino are all nearby.

In most cases, you will find reliable indications that will guide you in discovering the different paths.

The whole area is marked by the presence of signs and maps, placed just in sight of tourists and visitors. Once you reach the foot of Monte Cimone, stop for a few minutes to enjoy the splendid view and the colorful panorama.

All the lakes of Modena are immersed in unique and extraordinary areas and are mirrors of water capable of keeping you in suspense.

The legend of the two lovers

The Holy Lake is also known for a very particular legend, often associated with the story of Romeo and Juliet. The two stories have some similarities and could be the result of a "Modenese adaptation".

Like the two bold lovers of Verona, two shepherds who lived near today's lake, they were forced to stay apart by the hatred of their families. The two, madly in love with each other, often met in secret near the shore of the lake.

One winter day, during one of these happy encounters, the two shepherds died at the same time. The cold sheet of ice that covered the lake suddenly opened, just as their race had brought them into each other's arms.

Fate led them to one last embrace, which has since been called the "holy" embrace.
