Visiting the Apuan Alps, the protectors of Carrara marble

The Apuan Alps, located along the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany, are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy.

Home to the production of the white Carrara marble, characterized by the presence of hills that almost reach 2000 meters in height, the Apuan Alps are an irresistible place for trekking lovers.

Special roads and paths have been created to cross them comfortably, passing through the marble quarries and hidden caves along the way.

Uncontaminated landscapes of incredible beauty are found throughout the famous Apuan Alps Park, created in 1985 to protect the area and make it accessible to thousands of visitors.

Most of the places of interest are easily accessible, especially if you are used to walking or cycling in nature. The routes are well marked and several associations allow you to request guided tours.

The trails marked by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) are often considered the most varied and suitable for the whole family.

Let's see together what are the main attractions and the most beautiful landscapes to discover along the Apuan Alps, letting ourselves be carried away by the silence and the green of nature.

Mount Sumbra

Mount Sumbra is one of the most beloved by visitors, probably because of the legend in which it is the protagonist.

The shape of the mountain resembles that of a "panettone", with the top softened by time and nature. Along its slopes, you can see several cylindrical cavities that have taken the name "Marmitte dei Giganti".

Legend has it that once upon a time the giants reached the mountain and used it to place their pots - called marmitte - for cooking.

Cave of the Wind

Grotta del Vento, also known as "Bocca del Vento", is a natural cave located at the foot of Mount Pania Secca, within the Apuan Alps.

The cave is characterized by long, pointed stalactites and stalagmites that have completely transformed its interior.

The path to the Bocca del Vento is easy enough for children, who will have the opportunity to observe the calcareous formations of the cave at close range.

Corchia's Cave

The Antro della Corchia is an underground path that completely covers the surface of Mount Corchia. It is a series of caves and cavities of karst origin that have formed a large complex that can be visited in its entirety.

The two main caves, the Abisso Claude Fighiera and the Abisso Rodolfo Farolfi are connected by a series of steel walkways that form a single path of about 2 hours walking.

Lake of Gramolazzo

Lake Gramolazzo is located at the foot of Mount Pisanino, the highest of the Apuan Alps (1964 meters). Its clear surface reflects the profile of the mountain, creating a breathtaking image that has been immortalized by many landscape photographers.

The waters of the lake are not suitable for swimming, but it is still possible to walk along the shore and sit for a few hours of peaceful rest.
