The legend of Lake Alleghe

Lake Alleghe is a small lake of natural origin but with a suggestive charm. Located at the foot of the Belluno Dolomites, it did not exist before 1771. Its history is now a legend, and the story of its creation is one of the reasons that bring here many tourists fascinated not only by the landscape but also by what these places have to tell.

It is said that the sound of the church's bell tower can still be heard from the depths of the lake. The church of Alleghe was partially destroyed and the bell tower collapsed into the water on some beautiful days, it is still possible to see the top of the submerged bell tower in the clear water.

Lake Alleghe was formed on the night of January 11, 1771, when a huge landslide broke off from Mount Piz and collapsed downstream, blocking the course of the Cordevole River that flowed along the valley. The deposited rocks created a natural basin. During the landslide, the towns of Riete, Marin, and Fusine were also buried and the landslide killed 49 people.

In the first years of its formation, Lake Alleghe had a much larger surface than today, reaching almost to the town of Caprile. Over the years, the basin has shrunk and now has a circumference of about 4.5 km.

What to do at Lake Alleghe

If you want to admire this lake from close up, you can't miss a nice boat trip to the heart of the lake. You can rent a rowing boat or a pedal boat. From the middle of the lake you can enjoy the most beautiful and suggestive view of Mount Civetta, which dominates the town of Alleghe with its immense wall.

On the other hand, if you want to take a stroll, you can walk around the entire perimeter of the lake, a quiet walk that allows you to admire Lake Alleghe from different points of view and in 360°. The classic direction is the one that goes north, where you reach a Tibetan bridge that crosses a stream that leads to a wooded area. It is a fascinating area surrounded by nature.

For those who want to go for a ride, the bike path along Lake Alleghe leads to the town of Caprile, a short stretch of the entire large bike area of Agordino. An itinerary suitable for families and for those who love cycling from which to admire splendid mountain views.
