In South Tyrol, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo are a true symbol of the Dolomites. They are a scenic highlight within the Tre Cime Natural Park. The three rocky ridges rise straight and solemnly to the sky, from which they reflect the colors that turn red at sunset and gradually reveal themselves at dawn. A show to be seen, to be lived, to be experienced.
In fact, the Three Peaks were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. The rocky obelisks are made of limestone and are known as the Cima Grande, the one in the center that rises to 2999 meters, the Cima Ovest that measures 2973 meters, and finally the small Cima of 2857 meters.
The Three Peaks of Lavaredo are the natural monument that most attracts tourists and visitors from all over the world. Whether it is to admire the play of colors on the rocks or to climb the peaks, this place has become a point of reference, if not a symbol of the Dolomites. Let's see together what activities can be carried out on the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
The first ascent of the Cima Grande di Lavaredo was made on August 21, 1869, by the Viennese Paul Grohmann, who gave life to a series of climbs that are written in the great pages of mountaineering history.
Around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, there is an extensive network of paths and routes for all types of hikers. Some of these paths are equipped with fixed rope routes that allow you to reach very panoramic observation points, such as Cadini di Misurina and Monte Paterno.
The Monte Paterno via Ferrata is the one that offers a privileged view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and passes by several refuges, including the Auronzo Refuge. Along this via Ferrata, you can walk through the galleries of Monte Paterno, witnesses of the First World War that took place on the Three Peaks.
The excursions in these rocky places are particularly suggestive, in fact from here you can admire the most beautiful Dolomite groups: the Cristallo, the Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo, the Sesto Dolomites, the Croda Dei Toni, the Marmarole, but also the Misurina Lake and the Auronzo Lake.
The Three Peaks are reflected in Lake Misurina, a small pearl in the municipality of Auronzo di Cadore, perfect for its microclimate and its mild air. Misurina is the starting point for many excursions along well-trodden paths, either on foot or with snowshoes.
