What to see in Venice

Ve-nice is a city that needs no introduction. Both in Italy and abroad everyone knows it and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities that exist.

Many Italians, precisely because it is nearby, do not visit it often, and it is a very popular tourist destination. Yet, Venice deserves to be seen even simply for a weekend of art and romance.

Known as the Serenissima, Venice is the city of love, canals, and of carnival which is celebrated here with masks and a big party in the square. Its lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also the ideal destination for food and wine tourism enthusiasts.

Here we will embark on a short journey through the main and must-see attractions of the ancient and internationally known city that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

The canals of Venice and the Rialto Bridge

Venice is first and foremost a city on the water, devoid of streets but decorated with canals that can be crossed by gondola or Vaporetto. These are, in a way, the city's buses and offer the opportunity to take a tour of the city, admiring the impressive houses and buildings floating on the water.

The first thing to do in Venice is undoubtedly to walk along the Grand Canal, 4 km long and flanked by truly suggestive Gothic and Renaissance palaces.

Always gliding silently on the water, it is possible to admire the Rialto Bridge, one of the 354 bridges, but certainly the one that will remain the most impressive for its particular architecture. It is usually very crowded due to its small size, so the view from the canal offers an alternative point of view.

St. Mark's Square

The most famous of the squares in Italy, Piazza San Marco is a dream place from which to see the Basilica of San Marco, with its imposing domes. It is one of the largest spaces in Venice and for this reason, it is the seat of the main square. In the years of the Serenissima Republic, Venice hosted fairs, tournaments, processions, and the hunting of bulls, while today it is the ideal place to sip a coffee in the characteristic bars and enjoy a unique place.

The square contains a lot of beauty, starting with the Doge's Palace which welcomed all the Doges of Venice, underwent many changes throughout history, and hosted Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797.

Art in Venice

Not just museums but palaces and churches that contain exceptional works of art. Starting with the Accademia Galleries which house the works of Venetian and Venetian artists, such as Tiziano, Tintoretto, Giorgione, Bellini, Tiepolo, Canaletto, and many others. The highlight is undoubtedly Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.

For those who love contemporary and modern art, it is worth visiting the Peggy Guggenheim Museum which contains a collection that includes Pollock, de Chirico, Picasso, Kandinsky, and many others. Venice hosts not only ancient art but is also the seat of the Biennale and therefore of innovation and marries modern arts, the most popular film festival in the world takes place here.

If you are in Venice it is impossible not to visit the Basilica dei Frari, with the altarpieces by Titian and Bellini, and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, home to the frescoes by Tintoretto.
