A holiday in Asiago

A holiday spent on the Asiago Plateau is an ideal opportunity to enjoy a truly paradisiacal experience. Asiago is the principal town of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni in the province of Vicenza. It offers an ideal destination for holidays and weekends throughout the year.

The area is characterised by green meadows, dense forests, breathtaking scenery and an overall feeling of remoteness and tranquillity. A visit to the 444 steps of the Cala del Sasso is highly recommended. This stairway, carved into the mountain by man, was once a passage for trade and commerce between the plateau and the Piedmont plain. Today, it is a highly suggestive walk in the woods.

One more motivation to visit Asiago? The famous DOP brand cheese which is a real delicacy for connoisseurs and the most demanding palates. What else are you waiting for?

What to do in Asiago

The 'Altopiano dei sette comuni' includes the towns of Asiago, Rotzo, Enego, Foza, Roana, Gallio and Lusiana, all linked together by an ancient brotherhood. The plateau is protected northwards by the Pre-Alps which exceed two thousand meters in height. The landscapes offered by this plateau are Nordic, with characteristic villages and boundless valleys with vibrant colors.

Asiago and its surroundings offer the opportunity to make beautiful walks and trekking excursions, do not miss the one:

  • The rock labyrinth of Castelloni di San Marco.
  • The trenches of Monte Fior where the carved stones look like cities of rock.
  • The Valgadena canyon.
  • The Cima Portule, a spectacle of wild and infinite nature
  • The Mount Cengio, the most panoramic with a passage on the overhanging rock to Mount Zebio , Mount Ortigara, and to the mountain huts around Gallio.

The historical centre of Asiago is strategically located in the heart of the region, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. It offers a rich tapestry of hamlets, districts, squares and attractions, including the ancient astronomical instruments at the Asiago Cathedral, the Faun Fountain gardens in Piazza Carli and the distinctive Town Hall building, crafted from local red and white marble.

Furthermore, Asiago has preserved evidence of the battles of the First World War, with forts on the plateau that still retain their original structure. The forts of Verena, Campolongo and Lisser serve as enduring testimonies to the Great War. A military shrine has been constructed on Leiten hill, within which the remains of 60 soldiers are interred.

The town of Asiago is synonymous with cheese and a visit is incomplete without sampling the local product. Asiago cheese is produced in traditional ways by local dairies, and visitors are encouraged to taste it directly from the source. This will be an opportunity to experience the flavours of an ancient and vital land.
