Bolzano is a city that will amaze you! This capital city of Trentino Alto-Adige has a lot to see, discover, and above all enjoy. It lies calm in the shadow of the Dolomites, and the days pass by in the name of well-being, sport, clean air, and good food. But, Bolzano is this and much more.
Despite its relaxed, quiet, orderly, and peaceful atmosphere, Bolzano is a culturally active center and a city of a thousand shades, lively at its core. There are so many monuments to visit in Bolzano:
The Duomo.
The porticoes.
The market in Piazza delle Erbe.
The Archaeological Museum.
All this to then move on to excursions just outside the door towards the hills, to see Lake Carezza and, why not? The Dolomites...
Bolzano is the perfect destination for those who love skiing or the mountains in summer, for those who love Christmas markets, or for those who enjoy wonderful spring excursions.
The heart of the city is certainly Piazza Walther, named after Walther von der Vogelweide, whose statue stands in the center of the square. In this square, the most important meetings of the city take place, in the elegant cafes and in the rooms that open along the perimeter of the square, where the famous Christmas markets are held.
Then you cannot miss a visit to the Duomo: where the square is the heart, the Duomo represents the spirit of the city. This admirable example of late Gothic style was finished in 1420, but its origins are much older.
It stands on top of three churches, the oldest of which dates back to the early Christian period. The bell tower, for its part, is a work of art that cannot be missed, since it rises to a height of 65 meters and contains 25 bells that play different melodies.
Participating in the Christmas markets in winter and hearing the melody of these bells is an extraordinarily suggestive emotion.
Another square, that of the Herbs, is the undisputed protagonist of the city. Here the fruit and vegetable market takes place where residents buy fresh and genuine products from local producers. The arcades open the way to Piazza delle Erbe and the presence of the Fountain of Neptune, one of the 100 most beautiful fountains in Italy.
If you are curious, you certainly cannot miss a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Bolzano where you can find Ötzi, the ice man, the mummy of a man who lived in these areas more than 4,000 years ago. The museum has many other little surprises and curiosities for its visitors.
There are certainly two things that Bolzano can be proud of: the cuisine, substantial and rich, of high quality, and above all, local and the possibility of taking trips out of town to the Dolomites, in particular to Lake Carezza surrounded by spruce trees, or to the Dolomite glaciers perhaps by cable car.
