Grosseto is the largest Tuscan province in the region, with a unique territory of its kind. The historic center is still surrounded by the original walls, which have remained unchanged over the years.
Grosseto is a small jewel in the heart of the Maremma, interesting to visit and discover. A visit to the city that leads a short distance from the sea, so you can complete the weekend directly in Marina di Grosseto.
The right opportunity to visit the city with its monuments and historical buildings, but also the beautiful squares and museums. The variety of attractions makes it possible to satisfy the curiosity and preferences of the visitors, who can choose what can stimulate their curiosity.
Let's see what are the most interesting places and buildings to discover in Grosseto. So we can organize a visit right away.
It is advisable to start from the historical center, the heart of the city, characterized by the presence of important historical monuments.
The history of Grosseto goes back to the Etruscan period, so much so that the first evidence of its existence dates back to 823 AD. The city was then given to the Aldobrandeschi family, who guarded it until the arrival of King Ferdinando I.
Ferdinando I was responsible for the reconstruction of the hexagonal walls that can still be seen around the historic center and for the restoration of the most important monuments.
To begin the tour, it is necessary to start from Piazza Dante, the most beautiful square of the city, surrounded by delicate arcades.
Directly connected to the square is the Cathedral of Grosseto, known for its particularly impressive appearance.
The Cathedral was built around the 1300s, by the architect Sozzo di Rustichino. Inside it is possible to see unique and beautiful works, such as the Baptismal Font by Antonio Ghini and the altar of the Madonna.
Opposite the Cathedral, also in Piazza Dante, is the Palazzo Aldobrandeschi, built in honor of the Aldobrandeschi family, in medieval style and architecture.
It continues with the Church of San Pietro, an ancient building (built in the eighth century) in full Romanesque style.
Inside there is only one nave, instead of the usual three, precisely because the church is very small and was designed at the time to accommodate a small community.
The visit to Grosseto continues with another beautiful church, this time dedicated to San Francesco. The Church of San Francesco built around 1300, is particularly famous for the presence of the "Crucifix on a Table", a work attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna.
We then conclude with the Natural History Museum of Maremma, which is located directly in the historic center of Grosseto (Strada Corsini n 5).
The museum is organized on three levels, dedicated to the testimonies of the natural heritage of the Maremma.
The particularly bright spaces host areas dedicated to school activities, perfect for children and visiting families.
